In recent years, tungsten oxide has been commonly used as a raw material for tungsten powder and doping processes for the production of metals in the cemented carbide industry. However, the structure of the pores of different tungsten oxides will have different effects on the uniformity, purity and bulkiness of the finished tungsten powder product .Therefore, by determining the physical characteristics of tungsten oxide by a related physical method that is possible to increase the yield and efficiency of tungsten powder produced by tungsten oxide to a certain extent
Commonly used methods for the physical characterization of tungsten oxide include:The specific surface area is measured by BET method. The densities of micropores are determined by de Boer method. The micropore size distributions are determined by MP method. The mesopore analysis is performed by BJH method. There is a qualitative or quantitative relationship between the surface roughness of tungsten oxide and its specific surface area or pore volume.
The relevant researchers studied the specific surface area and mesopore volume and micropore volume of four different tungsten oxides by adsorption isotherm .The conclusion is that the powder of the violet tungsten oxide (VTO) has the largest mesopore volume, the smallest micropore volume, the narrowest pore size distribution and the largest average pore diameter that is favorable for hydrogen reduction to produce tungsten powder, which is unfavorable to the doping process. Hydrogen tungsten bronze (HTB) powder has the largest micropore volume, the broadest pore size distribution and the smallest average pore size, which is advantageous for the doping process. The above parameters for ammonium tungsten bronze (ATB) and blue tungsten oxide (TBO) range between VTO and HTB. Therefore, ATB and TBO do not have an ideal role for HTB in the doping process.
