World Cup: Robert Thornton pips Gary Anderson to Scotland PDC Darts Squad

Robert Thornton’s recent Wigan Players Championship double has  seen him pip Betway Premier League Darts rival Gary Anderson to a  spot in the Scottish bwin World Cup squad.

Somerset-based Anderson has been in resurgent form since the turn  of the year, winning four titles - the German Darts Championship  and three ProTour events.

However, rediscovering that triumphant habit has not been enough  to book his place on the plane to Hamburg for next month’s
£200,000 tournament.

Instead, flamboyant Peter Wright and The Thorn will fly the flag  for Scotland thanks to Thornton’s back-to-back victories at the
last floor event, which propelled him back up the rankings.Adrian Lewis will again pair 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor
as England go for three wins in as many years, with the  tournament at the Sporthalle from June 6-8 expanding from 24 to
32 nations.

World Champion Michael van Gerwen is partnered by Raymond van  Barneveld for a second successive year in the Dutch team.

Welsh duo Mark Webster and Richie Burnett link up once again,  with Brendan Dolan and Michael Mansell continuing their
partnership for Northern Ireland and Ireland seeing Connie Finnan  and William O'Connor travel to compete in Germany.

Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson once again represent Australia  - having been the beaten finalists in 2012 - while three-time
World Champion John Part is joined by emerging prospect Shaun  Narain in the Canadian team.

Experienced duo Darin Young and Larry Butler will spearhead the  American challenge, while last year's beaten finalists, brothers
Kim and Ronny Huybrechts, will again compete for Belgium.

The growth of top-class darts in Scandinavia is shown with the  inclusion of Norway - represented by Robert Wagner and Vegar
Elvevoll - alongside last year's semi-finalists Finland and their  rivals Sweden and Denmark.

Finland, who knocked out the Netherlands and Australia 12 months  ago will again rest their hopes on Jani Haavisto and Jarkko
Komula, with former World Championship qualifiers Per Laursen and  Dennis Lindskjold in action for Denmark and Magnus Caris joined  by Peter Sajwani in the Sweden team.

Germany are again represented by Jyhan Artut and Andree Welge,  with Mensur Suljovic joined in the Austrian team by Rowby-John  Rodriguez, the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship finalist who  is making his mark this year.

Spain, who reached the 2010 World Cup of Darts semi-finals, will  again be represented by Antonio Alcinas and Carlos Rodriguez,  while Dylan Duo and Dyson Parody once more team up for Gibraltar.

Rob Szabo, who represented New Zealand in the 2014 World  Championship, will make his World Cup debut alongside Craig
Caldwell, who competed in Germany last year.

World Championship star Devon Petersen will be partnered for  South Africa by newcomer Graham Filby, who has been a strong
performer on the domestic circuit, while Japanese pair Morihiro  Hashimoto and Haruki Muramatsu team up once again.

While both Hungary and Poland have previously competed twice in  the World Cup of Darts and Russia, Malaysia and Italy have on  appearance apiece, seven new nations will be making their debuts  in the tournament this year.

The expansion of the sport across Asia is highlighted with PDC  Tour Card Holder Royden Lam spearheading Hong Kong's first World  Cup of Darts event alongside Scott Mackenzie, a former World  Championship qualifier.

Recent PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship qualifier Amit  Gilitwala will be representing India, while the legendary veteran
star Paul Lim is in action for Singapore alongside namesake  Harith Lim.

The draw for the bwin World Cup of Darts takes place on Thursday  and will see the 16 seeded nations drawn against the other 16  teams for the knockout first round, with the tournament then  progressing in a bracket format.

At the Oche for the Darts Action

Wednesday, May 7, saw the start of the inaugural three-man team  summer league at the Golf Club. 8 teams had registered for some  summer darts fun. The format of games for this league is a round  robin, all team members play each other once, in a best of 3 501  game. Games are scheduled to be played in the Golf Club on a  Wednesday, Thursday or Friday night at 8pm. Alternative nights  can be arranged between teams if the scheduled night is, for some  reason, unsuitable for the players. This does depend on there  being no function on in the Golf Club on the desired evening. The  opening game had the Sparrows play the 26ers. Calum was first to  the oche for the Sparrows. Which Calum this is, is a bit of a  mystery as it just says “Calum” on the team sheet. Full names  on team sheets please for reports and statistics please Captains!

Calum played James MacAskill. Calum scored 2 x 100 to James’s 1  x100 and went on to win 2 – 0. Mairianne, there’s only one
darts player called Mairianne on the Island, was next up for the  Sparrows to play Cal MacLeod. Cal levelled the match score with
his 2 – 1 win, scoring 1 x100 and 1 x 134 on the way. The  Sparrows then sent Amanda, again, there’s only one darts playing
Amanda on the Island, to play Sander Peck. Sander took the 26ers  in front after winning 2 – 0. Calum then faced Cal MacLeod and  Calum equalised for the Sparrows winning 2 – 0 and scores of 1 x  140 and 1 x 125 to Cal’s 2 x 100. Mairianne then played Sander  and Sander took the 26ers back in front, winning 2 – 0. Amanda  then played against James MacAskill and James took the 26ers two  games in front after winning 2 – 0. Calum pulled one back for  the Sparrows scoring 1 x 121, 1 x 102 and 3 x 100 0n his way to  his 2 – 0 victory over Sander Peck, who scored 2 x 100. James  MacAskill regained the two point lead after beating Mairianne 2  – 0, scoring 1 x100 in the 2nd leg. The final game had Amanda  play Cal. Cal scored 2 x 100 but it was Amanda who won her first  league game with her 2 – 0 win. Well done Amanda! It’s a great  feeling to win your first game. I bet it won’t be your last,  after all, you’re team are playing mine on the 30th, and  everybody beats me eventually! Final score 5 – 4 to the 26ers.

Darts Championship

The inaugural Budweiser Bermuda Open Darts Championship was held  on Saturday evening [May 10] at Docksider’s Pub & Restaurant on  Front Street.

An eclectic mix of young, old, darts novices and seasoned players  battled through over 90 games of darts to decide an eventual
champion. The Tournament was played using the straight in rule and double  finish, from 501. Competitors shot one dart each at the Bullseye,  with the throwers dart that was closest starting the 1st leg. The  second player started the 2nd leg and if games were tied the two  players shot for Bullseye again to determine which player started  the final deciding leg.

Some awesome darts were thrown by all the competitors trying to  book their place in the final, with John Orr and Richard Phillips
just falling short. Richard Phillips did however win the highest  checkout with a super 120 – hitting treble 20, single 20 & then
double top.Chris Nelson had the lowest dart game with 13 darts, on his way  to the final. However Simon ‘Stubby’ Carruthers proved to be a  step too far in the final. Nelson won the 1st leg, which was
Carruthers’s only leg against all night.

Nelson also hit three 180’s in the final trying to keep  Carruthers at bay, but the eventual winner hit two 180’s of his  own and took out 96 in two darts to win three legs to one and  lift the inaugural title.

Premier League Darts: Gary Anderson out to Silence Snipers as the Targets Finals Spot

SCOTS ace Anderson has encountered two years of taunts as his  form slumped but is determined to continue his good run with
victory at London O2 this month.

GARY ANDERSON wants to win the Betway Premier League and stuff  two years of taunts back down the throats of his critics.

The fired-up Scot is ready to prove a point to his detractors who  plunged the knife into him during his spell in the doldrums.

Anderson had to cope with the death of both brother Stuart and  dad Gordon during a form slump after winning the 2011 Premier
League but was cut no slack.

The Borders ace hasn’t forgotten those jibes and believes a win  at London’s O2 Arena this month would be the perfect response.

Anderson said: “I want to get to the finals, see a few Scotland  flags, win it and shut a few people up.

“You get these folk on Facebook and Twitter slagging you. I’d  say, ‘Come and do it yourself. If it’s that easy, don’t sit at  home and press buttons on your phone’.”Anderson can seal his place at the finals by beating Raymond van  Barneveld on Thursday in Bournemouth. He will also go through if  fellow Scot Peter Wright loses to league leader Michael van  Gerwen.”

Premier League Darts: Peter Wright Maintains Play-off Hopes after Draw with Phil Taylor

Peter Wright kept alive his hopes of qualifying for the Premier  League play-offs as he battled hard to claim a 6-6 draw with Phil
Taylor in Newcastle.

Six-time champion Taylor headed into the encounter knowing that a  win would confirm his place in the semi-finals and had a dart in  the deciding leg to clinch victory. But he was unable to convert as Wright snatched a draw, meaning  the fight for the final two play-off places, involving both men  and Gary Anderson, will go down to the wire in Brighton next  week.

Wright started well as he claimed an immediate break of the  throw, but Taylor hit back to claim the next two and looked to  have landed a real body blow when he took out 120 after Wright  had missed three darts at a double to lead 3-1.

But 'Snakebite' responded well and calmly took out both 55 and 49  in two darts to haul himself level at the halfway point.

He would get his nose in front again as he took advantage of some  sloppy finishing from his rival to claim a third straight leg,  but Taylor then produced his best spell of the match to take  control again.

Having clinically taken out 65 to level, the 16-time world  champion came up with an 11-darter, featuring two maximums, to  open a 5-4 lead.

Wright held his nerve to level, but Taylor ensured he would take  at least a point from the match when he found tops to move 6-5 to  the good.

In a dramatic denouement, Wright just failed with a 150 checkout  - stopping to goad the crowd between his second and third darts -  to leave a clearly unimpressed Taylor with three darts at 62 for  the match. But he missed with a single dart at double-16 allowing Wright to  return and take out double-nine for a share of the spoils.

"I was gutted, I had my chances and I missed a lot of doubles  there. But I'm happy to still be in there," Taylor told Sky
Sports afterwards.

"I'll be trying to win, a draw might get me through, but it's  going to be a twitchy, twitchy time next week. There's three of  us fighting for two spaces, it's brilliant really."Anderson earlier beat Dave Chisnall 7-4 to ensure he is now level  on points with Taylor in the standings and one ahead of Wright  going into the final round of the regular season.

In the top-of-the-table clash between Dutchmen Michael van Gerwen  and Raymond van Barneveld, it was the former who claimed bragging  rights with a 7-4 win over his compatriot.Barney had opened a 3-1 lead in the early stages, but his younger
rival came roaring back with four straight legs to put himself  firmly in the driving seat.

Although van Barneveld stopped the rot in the ninth, van Gerwen  would not be denied and finished the job in real style with a 132
checkout to ensure he moved two points clear at the top of the  table.

In the night's other match, Adrian Lewis put a nightmare run  behind him with a hard-fought 7-5 triumph over Robert Thornton.

Lewis had not tasted victory in his eight previous matches in the  competition, but produced a maximum in the final leg before
hitting double-five to finally get back to winning ways.
