Titanium vs. Tungsten Jewelry

Due to scientific developments, alternative metals are becoming more popular within the fine jewelry industry. Although gold, silver, and platinum are still the most popular metals, alternative metals offer a different look and hypoallergenic options for consumers with sensitive skin. More specifically, titanium and tungsten have been growing in popularity.
Tungsten Facts
Facts-About.org says that tungsten is "extracted from wolframite, scheelite, and other minerals." Tungsten is typically mixed with carbide to make it scratch-proof.

Tungsten Pros
Tungsten is known to last long and is said to outlive the wearer. It is corrosion- and scratch-resistant, and requires very little maintenance.

Tungsten Cons
Tungsten rings may contain cobalt, which may cause negative skin reactions in some wearers. Titanium-Jewelry.com says that tungsten "will develop oxidation spots that cannot be removed or polished out."

Titanium Facts
Facts-About.org says titanium is "the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust." Titanium is lightweight, yet strong and long-lasting.

Titanium Pros
Titanium is hypoallergenic and preferred by consumers with sensitive skin. Titanium is not a precious metal, so it is inexpensive.

Titanium Cons
Titanium cannot be soldered, therefore, prong settings cannot be created to set diamonds or gem stones. Titanium jewelry cannot be sized, so you must be fitted before ordering.

Can Alcohol Ruin Jewelry?

Rubbing alcohol is used to kill bacteria and remove dirt from many different things, including jewelry. Before you use alcohol to clean your favorite gold and diamond necklace or your body jewelry, you need to know which materials will be damaged by it and the correct ways to clean them effectively.

Alcohol-safe Metals
Precious metals--all genuine golds and silvers--will not be damaged by cleaning them with alcohol. The higher the karat of the gold, the softer it is, but it still won't be ruined by the alcohol itself. Platinum, silver and silver-plated jewelry is also safe to clean with alcohol, as are the most stable metals such as titanium, tungsten and stainless steel.

Materials Alcohol Will Damage
Plastics and jewelry made from acrylic, like some types of body jewelry, should not be cleaned with rubbing alcohol. The materials will become discolored or will develop tiny cracks or holes from the alcohol which will become breeding grounds for bacteria and infection.

Gemstones
Precious stones such as diamond and rubies can be cleaned effectively and safely with rubbing alcohol the same way that precious metals can be cleaned. These stones are "precious" because they are harder and more stable than semi-precious stones. Most semi-precious stones, such as amethyst and topaz, can be cleaned with alcohol as well without being ruined. However, pearls and opals are naturally coated with an organic material that gives them their shine, and this coating can be eaten away by cleaning them with alcohol. You should only clean pearls and opals with a mild soap and water mixture.

How to Clean Jewelry

Before cleaning your jewelry, examine it carefully to make sure that all settings, clasps and prongs are secure. Once you've done that, you're ready to proceed.

1.Use a nonabrasive jewelry cleaner, which you can purchase at a local jewelry store. Or use a cleaning solution of mild dish soap and water.

2.Dip the jewelry in the cleaner or cleaning solution.

3.Clean the silver with a nonabrasive silver polish.

4.Buff dry with a soft, lint-free cloth until it's shiny.

5.Clean the silver with a nonabrasive silver polish.

6.Apply the polish with a soft cloth, gently working it into stains.

7.Wipe away excess polish and buff the jewelry with a soft, lint-free cloth until it's shiny.

8.Keep in mind that frequently wearing silver jewelry can keep it from becoming tarnished.

At Home Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Jewelry cleaning can be somewhat of an added expense if your jewelry requires frequent cleaning from normal daily wear. While taking your jewelry to a jeweler for cleaning may seem simplistic and understated, this can add up quickly and provide apprehension when opting to let someone else clean your valuable jewelry pieces. Nonetheless, instead of paying for expensive cleaning, you can opt to clean your jewelry pieces at home to save time, money and skepticism.

Gold and Gemstone Jewelry
If you have pieces crafted of gold or gemstones including diamonds, the best option to prevent scratching while concurrently cleaning the jewelry is to use isopropyl alcohol in 70-percent strength and water. Take one part alcohol and one part water and allow the pieces to soak for two to three hours. After soaking the jewelry, take a small and very soft toothbrush and use circular motions to clean away remaining dirt or particles. Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to air dry. After each piece has dried, you can then opt to polish the jewelry with a lint-free cloth and store for the next use.

Pearl Jewelry
The best option when cleaning pearls is to only use a damp lint-free cloth to gently lift away any dirt or residue that the pearls may have accumulated. Next, take a small drop of mineral oil or olive oil to restore the pearlescent shine. Finally, take a lint-free cloth and wipe away any remaining oil residue and store for the next use.

Silver Jewelry
Silver can be cleaned using one part ammonia and one part water. Take a small soft toothbrush or nail brush to gently remove any dirt or oil in conjunction with the ammonia and water solution. Next, allow the silver to air dry. After the jewelry has dried, you can then buff and polish silver jewelry with a lint-free cloth and store for the next use. While silver jewelry can be cleaned in the same way as gold, it is important to refrain from chlorine when cleaning and in between cleanings, as chlorine tarnishes silver products.

Costume Jewelry
Although your costume jewelry may not contain any precious metals like gold or silver or any actual gemstones, many of these pieces are simulated stones and are usually composed of metal. Therefore, it is important to use as little water as possible when cleaning. Instead, opt for a damp cloth with two drops of water and two drops of isopropyl alcohol in 70-percent strength, and polish the jewelry using a buffing motion. Next, take a small amount of water to rinse the jewelry. Allow the jewelry to air dry , and store for the next use thereafter. The next cleaning should only involve polishing with a lint-free cloth to remove any dirt or residue, as excessive use of water and other products may cause this jewelry to turn green.

Safety Issues with Tungsten Wedding Rings

When it is time to begin shopping for wedding rings, you and your soon-to-be spouse want it to be perfect. These are the rings you will wear for the rest of your lives, and there are so many options to choose from. In more traditional settings, you have gold, platinum and white gold. These options are often pricey and easily damaged. More recently, titanium and tungsten carbide have become more popular options for couples looking for a more long-lasting effect. With the more durable tungsten carbide ring, couples have seen some safety issues that may not be seen with more traditional options.

Emergency Situations
The tungsten carbide ring cannot be removed in an emergency situation with traditional ring cutters. It can be removed by emergency personnel by using a tool more similar to a vice grip. In emergency situations when the ring must be removed for the purposes of treatment or stopping further injury from occurring, it must be cracked off the wearer’s finger. This would destroy the ring by breaking the ring into pieces and may cause injury to the wearer. The tungsten carbide ring registers between 8 and 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Because of these factors, it also cannot be resized in a traditional manner.

Skin Reactions
Tungsten carbide rings can cause an allergic reaction on the skin. These rings are made by combining the tungsten with another metal. Most often, the other metal is a nickel or cobalt blend. This hardens the ring and prevents many of the scratches that are common on softer metals. This is important because the cobalt blend can cause allergic reactions when worn for long periods of time. The skin cells and sweat can cause oxidation, and skin and ring discoloration. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to make sure that you check the metal blend. Cobalt is a little less expensive, but nickel is entirely hypoallergenic and does not suffer from oxidation.

Injury from Accidents
Tungsten carbide rings can be caught in industrial settings. It is rarely advisable to wear jewelry in warehouse, automotive, construction or manufacturing industries; however, tungsten carbide rings are particularly dangerous. Many pieces of jewelry will bend or break when pressure is put on them from machines or other areas. If the pulling occurs or the ring becomes caught, the ring will not break and may cause further injury to the person involved.
