China’s First Rare Earth Disc Motor Intelligent Demonstration Line Put into Operation

Recently, the Inner Mongolia Daily reported that China’s first rare earth disc motor intelligent demonstration line has been completed and put into operation at the Rare Earth New Material Technology Innovation Center. Its first mature product—a rare earth permanent magnet axial flux motor with a thickness of only 6 millimeters—has stunned the industry with its breakthrough performance indicators. The commissioning of this intelligent production line marks a critical step forward in China’s research, development, and industrialization of high-end rare earth permanent magnet motors, opening a new competitive arena on the global stage.

According to reports, this automated demonstration line, built by the Rare Earth New Material Technology Innovation Center in collaboration with Germany’s FEAAM Company under the "China-Germany Permanent Magnet Motor Joint Research Center," has successfully rolled out a 3-watt micro rare earth permanent magnet motor. With a thickness of just 6 millimeters, this motor reduces volume by 60% and weight by 80% compared to similar products, yet it boasts a rated speed of 4,500–5,500 revolutions per minute, a maximum torque of approximately 15 millinewton-meters, and a peak efficiency exceeding 70%, exemplifying "big energy in a small package."

This ultra-thin, high-performance motor has demonstrated broad application prospects. The research team revealed that they have reached a cooperation agreement with a well-known domestic automaker, with the motor set to be initially applied in intelligent cabin cooling systems for vehicles. In the future, its applications are expected to extend to consumer electronics, cooling garments, drones, and robot joint modules, among other fields.

As a key platform in Baotou City’s efforts to accelerate the construction of "two rare earth bases" along the innovation chain, this demonstration line is expected to achieve mass production by the end of the year, with an annual capacity of 500,000 units. "From laboratory to demonstration line, the completion of this production line is a result of deep integration between industry, academia, research, and application," said Yan Liang, a member of the project team. It not only serves as clear evidence of the innovative strength of Baogang Group and Northern Rare Earth in the application of rare earth new materials but also injects new momentum into the global technological upgrade of the rare earth permanent magnet motor industry.

Rare earth permanent magnet motors, owing to the high magnetic energy product and coercivity of rare earth magnets, offer advantages such as small size, light weight, high efficiency, and excellent performance. They are widely used in fields such as aerospace, defense, industrial and agricultural production, and daily life.
